What is John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release (JFB-MFR)?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a specialized form of massage therapy/manual therapy taught by John F. Barnes. The therapist will use her/his hands to treat your body while you are on a comfortable treatment table. MFR utilizes techniques that are very different from other forms of manual therapy such as chiropractic, rolfing or generalized massage. The therapist finds restrictions in your myofascial system (myo = muscles/ fascia = connective tissues) and gently stretches, or "releases", those restrictions to improve function, minimize pain and restore individuals to an optimal life experience.
Because the fascial system is a continuous, uninterrupted 3-dimensional web that runs from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet, it directly impacts and influences every system and motion center of the body. It is a dynamic, profoundly relaxing and deepening technique that is lasting.
MFR is a wholistic "whole body" approach. Sessions may vary, for example, even if your primary issue is neck stiffness or pain, your therapist might release restrictions in your ribcage, pelvis, arms and legs because every part of your body affects every other part of your body via the fascial web. Fascial restrictions, which do not appear on standard medical tests (X-rays, MRI's, CT scans, etc), are a frequent root cause of chronic pain, immobility and/or decreased function in millions of frustrated clients.

What is Fascia?
Fascia is an amazing, fluid, interconnected "web" of connective tissue which spans our body three-dimensionally, uninterrupted from head to toe. Fascia surrounds, supports, nourishes, excretes waste, has memory, and infuses with every structure of the body (organs, nerves, blood vessels, the lymphatic system, etc) down to the cellular level. It connects bone to bone, muscle to muscle, organ to organ, nerve to nerve, blood vessel to blood vessel. It is able to withstand tremendous internal (hydrostatic) and external (gravity, pressure) forces, with the tensile strength to withstand 2000 lbs. per square inch of pressure. It is made up of collagen and elastin supported in a gelatinous matrix. It is the tough, outer opaque white covering you see on store bought meat (steak). The malfunction of our fascial system (connective tissue) leads to Pain and Disease.

What is a Myofascial Restriction?
Fascia, is ideally very fluid in its healthy state. (Think of the resilience of a sponge full of water.)
When prolonged inflammation occurs, the ground substance of the fascia begins to dry out (think of the same sponge, bone dry and curled at the edges, or the bowl of jello, left uncovered and drying out overnight). The collagen fibers begin to thicken and harden by shortening and "knitting" themselves together by laying down fiber after reinforcing fiber (think of sewing a crocheted piece together, bunching and sewing until you have a knot of thread and yarn that is almost impossible to pull apart or cut). The elastin fibers become trapped and shortened within the collagen fiber knots, and can no longer expand and contract. This is how myofascial restrictions are formed, including the toughest of them all, i.e.scar tissue.
Trauma, be it physical or emotional, chronic poor posture, or inflammation creates tension in the fascia (connective tissue) causing it to stiffen locally. But, because it is essentially, an interconnected web, this then pulls into other areas, much like when you pull the threads on a sweater causing all the other threads to organize along the lines of tension. This can create bizarre symptoms such as pain, tingling or burning some distance from the originally affected area as the strong fascia binds down on pain sensitive structures like nerves and blood vessels. The body loses its flexibility and orientation in space becomes compromised so it needs more energy just to stay upright and function. As this process continues, the immune system may become compromised, stress may not be as easily managed, and chronic pain can set in eventually causing disease or dis-ease in the body.

How can John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release (JFB-MFR) help?
Malfunction of the fascial system is due to: accidents, falls, surgeries and scars, anxiety and emotional issues, tension and stress, plus years of poor posture or micro-trauma. This causes crushing pressure on our body; its systems, organs, blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves and muscles (2000 lbs. per square inch!). This in turn leads to tightness, pain and lack of motion as it pulls and twists and torques our body into DYSFUNCTION and leading ultimately to disease processes (DIS-EASE). For example: forward head, rounded or uneven shoulders, scoliosis, excessive low back curve, legs that turn in or out. These postural misalignments can eventually lead to issues with organs in the body.
Myofascial Release Therapy as taught by John F. Barnes, P.T., unwinds this tension and tightness, layer by layer, allowing the body to "let go", and soften, and along with it, any "holding" or "bracing" patterns by making space, by stretching and elongating, and re-balancing to a place of EASE. Because our body has "tissue memory", when restrictions are released, any memories and/or emotions connected with that particular restriction are also "released" for total physical, emotional and energetic healing.
